Extra Information R. occidentale was discovered by Capt. Beechy in 1827. Seed sent to Veitch Nursery in England by William Lobb around 1850 from collections in California. Hardy to about -12° F in habitat. Range - sea level to 5,000' or more in Southern Oregon to Southern California. Northern limit, about Coos Bay, Oregon. Southern limit, unknown but to at least the Mexican boarder east of Los Angles. Plants from this source soon played an important part in the deciduous hybrids of Europe. Flowers are very variable. With or after the leaves, mid-April to mid-August, gradual flaring tube. 1/2" to 4" across, white, yellow, orange pink to red, or various combinations in stripes and dots; usually strong yellow to orange blotch; margins entire to frilled or notched, occasionally petiloid, fragrant in clusters five to fifty. Flowers in a truss will open over a period of a couple of weeks. Spent flowers and small immature buds can found in the same truss. Flowers are often asymmetrical. Leaves usually pubescent on both sides
